After breaking a record 12-game winning streak, capturing a league title, and going undefeated at home all season, the City College women's volleyball team fell just short of the state final eight with a loss to sixth-ranked Cypress in the second round of the Southern California Regional on Saturday.

The Lady Vaqs have been a top contender in California all year, and after the first-round playoff victory over Fullerton, the squad earned home court advantage heading into the game against Cypress.

The two teams proved why they were two of the best in the state, as the girls from each side would go spike for spike throughout the match. Cypress won the final set 15-11 to win the match 3-2 and end the Vaqs' season.

"We gave it our all," said second-year outside hitter Maria Mayer. "We tried everything we could and we never let down. We fought as hard as we could but they just gave us a very, very tough match."

Mayer would earn all-state honors after a season where she ranked ninth in the league in kills with 109. She added 11 kills for the Vaqs on Saturday, but just couldn't get it done against the tough Cypress squad.

City College rallied back and forth in the first set, tying the game 13 times before Cypress went on a run to win the set 25-19. The Lady Vaqs responded in an extremely close second set, winning 26-24.

"It was a good battle," said head coach Ed Gover, who won coach of the year in the WSC for the second time. "Both teams left it all on the court."

The women's volleyball team had a successful season regardless of the playoff loss, winning the WSC title and finishing the season with a 21-3 final record.

Jennifer Waddill, Kelsey Soos and Maria Mayer were all named to the all-conference team as the best players at their respective positions in the league.
