Santa Barbara City College has a new Study Abroad Program called Pacific Rim studies. This is not a conventional history course; these classes will allow students to get units while in China and Vietnam.
The cost of the program is $6,500 which includes round-trip air, sea and land transportation from Los Angeles or San Francisco, all accommodations, most meals, required field trips, entrance fees, and guest lecturers. It will last 13 weeks between September and December 2008.
"When the world is our classroom a lot of exciting things happen," said Dr. Ayanna Yonemura, Ethnic Studies professor and the program co-director. "When we talk about study abroad there is no such thing as a typical day."
Yonemura has previously taught Anthropology at Frankfurt University, in Germany, and World History in Eritrea, East Africa.
"Every week we will be doing new things and students will not be getting bored. We will have always something going on," said Dr. Matthew Mooney, a history professor at City College and the other program co-director.
Students will be able to experience the history while on the Great Wall of China and visiting Tiananmen Square. Students will then venture to Vietnam to participate in History 115, The Vietnam Wars, in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and then travel around the country.
Nevertheless the classes will be in China and Vietnam, knowledge of those languages is not a prerequisite.
"All the instruction is in English and all our excursions will have English speaking guides," Mooney said.
"This is a study abroad that is not language focused," Yonemura said. "Our program offers history, anthropology, ethnic studies and also education courses."
The possibility of financial aid is available through FAFSA for students who qualify. "There are probably additional scholarships for those who go to the classroom to teach English to the Chinese university students," Yonemura said. These are paid internships from $500 to $1,000 to assist Chinese teachers who teach English at the Shandong University in Jinan.
