Marching for peace
City College students were out in force as drum beats and saxophone jazz echoed through a crowd of over 2,000 anti-war protesters on Saturday. The march for peace started at 12:15 p.m. at Vera Cruz Park on Cota Street and then veered right to take over State Street.

Brief- Vice Presidential debate to be shown today on campus

The Sigma Chi Eta and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Societies are inviting students and faculty to attend a free viewing of the vice presidential debate scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today in room 211 of the Administration building. The debate between Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Joseph Biden, from Delaware, will be broadcasted live from Washington University in St.

Amphitheater to be built on West Campus

Confusion and curiosity ensued when the college erected a chain-link fence on West Campus March 9. The surprise fence's purpose is to contain the construction of a new amphitheater. Despite the relative quickness in the fence's appearance, the $289,000 project has been in place since last May, when the facilities committee in the Board of Trustees approved the amphitheater and signed an architect.

Spring brings online registration

Mock registration number three for Banner, the online registration system, took place March 13 and resulted in positive feedback from students. Over 200 students participated in the mock registration and about 122 student responded to the user-friendly system.

Students to take trip to model U.N.

City College political science students will participate in the Western Collegiate Model United Nations (M.U.N) during spring break from April 4-6. "Americans tend to think that they are the center of the universe, but we are not," Political Science Professor Peter Haslund said.

Students restore campus hillside
On Friday morning, students in the horticulture restoration class and members of Growing Solutions, a local non-profit organization, got down on their hands and knees to turn a weed patch back into a native habitat. The Santa Ynez band of Chumash Indians donated $9,000 to City College towards the restoration of the hillside, which is adjacent to the Lifescape Garden path.

Ordinance for evictions in IV underway

Yellow flyers pop out from door frames all over Isla Vista. They read, "Stop the conquest of IV!" in all capital letters and demand a boycott of Conquest Student Housing, all courtesy of the Isla Vista Tenants Union (IVTU). Keith Russell, a City College student senator, is working with the IVTU on a just-cause ordinance to prevent mass evictions like the one that resulted in the eviction of 55 families in August 2006.

Brief - Student conference addresses revolution

On April 20 from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. the Honors Program will be hosting the fourth annual City College student conference. This year's theme is "Revolutionary Thought, Revolutionary Action: What Role Does Revolution Have in the World Today?" Projects may include papers of up to six pages in length or videos of up to 10 minutes in length.

Brief - Eli Luria Library to host annual fundraiser

The Friends of the Luria Library are holding their annual book sale and fundraiser on March 22 and 23. It will be held in the library, in room L-146, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. "The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money to buy books and equipment for the library," said City College librarian M'liss Garza.

Brief - Senate looking for a few good senators

The 2007-2008 Associated Student Senate applications will be available March 23 in the Student Life Office. Applications and candidate platforms are due March 30 at 3 p.m. "The Student Senate is a great way to get involved in the campus community," said Vice President Tamara Pitts.

Brief - Deadline for degree application coming up

The deadline for students to file applications for degrees and certificates for spring 2007 is March 30. Deadline for summer 2007 degrees and certificates is July 2. "It's really important that the students make the deadline because after the 30, it is a case-by-case review where they would have to meet with an academic counselor," said student program advisor Magdalena Torres.
